We continued our tradition of inviting critically acclaimed, award winning authors to work with our pupils when Piers Torday visited the school in February 2019. Described as ‘The new master of books for children' by The Times, Piers spoke to Senior School children about how he got into writing, the books that shaped him, and how together, reading and writing stories can change lives.
Piers’ bestselling first series for children, The Last Wild trilogy was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Award, nominated for the Carnegie Medal and won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize (for The Dark Wild). He was inspired to write these books by the shocking discovery that Earth has lost over 60% of its wildlife in the last 40+ years. He challenged the children to think what might happen in the next 40 years and their part in addressing this situation.
Pupils and staff alike were spellbound by Piers’ brilliant storytelling and captivated & enthralled by the magical & bewitching power of his stories
